Dresden Xmas Tram

Find your Christmas cheer on the Dresden Xmas Tram!

This time of year, people might feel lonelier than ever. Christmas isn’t always candles, fairy lights, mulled wine and treats. Social anxiety, coerced happiness, expanding waistlines and loose ends can dampen even the hardiest of Christmas spirits. Double-fold if you’re in a foreign country and you don’t know anyone and you’re not flying home for the holidays to see your family and friends.
Enter – the Xmas Tram.
I stumbled across the add on Facebook and told my wife and we bought tickets immediately. Cost? Just three euro. We paid up unsure what to expect, but boy were we not disappointed. The idea is simple; expats, uni students or anyone who likes singing carols and trying new things can come along and enjoy the Xmas Tram. We met at a tram stop in the south of the city and travelled for about an hour past the Christmas markets and orchestrated by a choir to sing songs and enjoy the sights of the city at night. After the hour was up we were greeted with German glühwein and a brass band, Dresdener Stollen and more at the Tram Museum. Inside there were stands for different activities – gingerbread house building, decoration making, tours around the tram museum and even a well-stocked buffet. And of course, more mulled wine to drink!
The main part of the night though was for those who might be alone over the Advent and New Year period to find an invitation (or Patenangebote in German) advertised by a local to do something together. Games nights, tours of the night markets, bowling, Schrottwichteln, Christmas biscuit baking and more were on offer. And they went so quickly! Curious for a taste of a German Christmas, people from China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Mexico, Brazil, Cameroon, all added their names and found something to do and new people to meet. It’s such a wonderful idea for integration and community spirit and I would thoroughly recommend it to everybody next year if you’re wondering what to do one night early next December.

Also, for those who feel lucky – you might win one of the prizes like we did. Two tickets to the Three Wishes of Cinderella in Moritzburg. To all at the Xmas Tram, a big thank you from us! It was a great night had by one and all.
